Choosing the VTVLC Course That’s Right for You

by | Sep 18, 2024

If you’re new to online learning or to Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC), navigating all the available options can feel overwhelming. You might find yourself asking questions like, “What is rolling enrollment?” or “What’s the difference between asynchronous and synchronous learning?”

At VTVLC, we offer a variety of K-12 online learning programs tailored to fit diverse student needs. Whether you’re looking for flexibility around a busy schedule, a full-time online school experience, or supplemental courses to enhance your traditional schooling, this guide will help you choose the best VTVLC program for your educational journey.

Traditional Courses: Online Learning Aligned to a Traditional Academic Calendar

Traditional courses are half-credit courses available in a range of subjects, including core content, health, physical education, global languages, and electives. These courses align with a typical academic calendar—fall courses run from late August to mid-January, while spring courses start in mid-January and end in late June.

Who are traditional courses for?

Traditional courses are ideal for students who attend brick-and-mortar schools but would like to enroll in one or two online courses. Traditional courses can help students navigate scheduling conflicts and increase options for students. For example, if two classes you want to take are offered at the same time at your local school, you can choose to take one of them online with VTVLC. Alternatively, if your local school doesn’t offer a certain niche elective or and Advanced Placement (AP) course you’d like to take, our traditional courses can fill those gaps.

Our traditional courses are fully asynchronous, allowing students to complete work at their own pace while adhering to assignment deadlines.

Common reasons students choose traditional courses:

Scheduling flexibility: Balance online learning with in-person schooling.
Course availability: Access courses that your local school doesn’t offer.

On-Demand Courses: Flexibility with Rolling Enrollment

On-demand courses at VTVLC are asynchronous and offered year-round on a rolling basis, giving students the flexibility to start on the 1st or 15th of any month. These courses must be completed within six months, making them ideal for students who prefer a more personalized learning pace.

Who are on-demand courses for?

On-demand courses cater to students who need flexibility due to extracurricular activities, work, or personal circumstances. Rolling enrollment for on-demand courses means you don’t have to wait until the start of a semester—jump in when you’re ready. These courses are also great for students who might want to accelerate their learning and complete more courses within an academic year.

Key benefits of on-demand courses:

Personalized pacing: Work at a speed that fits your learning style.
Rolling enrollment: Start your course when it suits you best, no waiting for a new semester.

Personalized Assessment of Student Standards (PASS): Independent Study for Passion Projects

Our Personalized Assessment of Student Standards (PASS) program allows students to dive deep into subjects they are passionate about through independent study. With the guidance of a qualified teacher, students design a custom curriculum around a specific topic that might not be covered in traditional courses.

Who is PASS for?

PASS is perfect for self-motivated students who want to explore subjects in greater depth or pursue projects that aren’t part of standard offerings. Whether it’s studying a niche area of history, or mastering an art form, the PASS program lets students chart their own educational course.

PASS highlights:

Custom learning paths: Pursue a subject that interests you, with expert guidance.
Independent learning: Build valuable skills like time management and self-discipline.

Who is the full-time program for?

Full-time program perks:

Flexibility: Learn on your own schedule while still participating in live classes and group activities.
