Middle School Field Trip: Mount Mansfield Hike

We are excited to invite all VTVLC middle schoolers and their families to a fun and adventurous day hike on Vermont’s highest mountain, Mount Mansfield. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, connect with nature, and spend quality time with friends and family.
Virtual Event: Skype with A Scientist

5th and 6th Graders are connecting with Skype a Scientist as part of their first science unit about science in our everyday lives and science careers.
We will have the pleasure of having the following scientists tell us about their jobs and interests in science:
- Matthew Summers, Cell/Developmental Biologist and Associate Professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine/Wexner
- Emilie Justen, A plant scientist specializing in invasive species from at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture
Virtual Field Trip: Wolf Conservation Center

The Montshire Museum will visit K-4 classes for a virtual presentation on frogs and toads.
Virtual Field Trip to Vermont Institute of Natural Science
January 25th, 2024
Give A Hoot, 10 am, for K-4 Students: Discover the incredible adaptations owls have that enable them to be fierce predators in our nighttime skies. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between two common owls, and listen to the calls they make. Touchable artifacts round out this live animal encounter.
Raptors Up Close, 11 am, for 5-6 Students: Live falcons, hawks and owls provide the lens through which we examine food webs, predator-prey relationships and the interdependence of the systems that support life. This first-hand encounter enables participants to understand the defining characteristics that make a bird a raptor and their adaptations for life as a predator on the wing. Touchable artifacts and hands-on materials round out this special experience.
VSARN Book Project
December 14th, 9 & 10 am
The Vermont Student Anti-Racism Network will virtually visit VTVLC and read and teach a lesson around books that leave students more knowledgeable about the reality of racism. K-4 will explore “The Youngest Marcher” by Audrey Faye Hendricks, while grades 5-8 dive into “The Boy and the Bindi” by Vivek Shraya.

Info Sessions for Incoming 9th Graders
Incoming 9th graders: join us for one of our upcoming info sessions for students who will be attending VTVLC during the 2023-2024 academic year. During the session, students will have the opportunity to learn more about VTVLC. VTVLC’s 9-12 principal, Jess Leo, will be available to answer any questions and provide guidance on how to succeed at VTVLC.

Virtual Field Trip: Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences
This field trip allows our K-8 students to learn about the fascinating world of predatory birds and owls.
During this engaging and interactive experience, students will have the opportunity to learn about the habits and behaviors of these amazing creatures from our expert guides at the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences. They’ll discover how different species of birds and owls have adapted to their environments and explore the important role these animals play in our ecosystems.

VTVLC K-8 students are invited to see Jared Campbell perform. Jared Campbell is an award winning singer/songwriter from upstate New York and has been traveling the country performing for thousands of people and hundreds of schools over the past decade. His main focus is allowing his music to impact the lives of his listeners by experiencing joy, finding comfort through pain, and looking past obstacles towards living a better life. His songs are said to be uplifting, thought provoking and emotionally heartfelt. This will be Campbell’s second performance for VTVLC!

Book Diversity Project: Special lesson for K-5 Classes
The Vermont Student Anti-Racism Network is a statewide group of students working to promote anti-racism in VT schools. Their current project is the elementary school book project, where they are donating anti-racist picture books to elementary schools and designing lesson plans to present in classrooms. The book choices include: All because You Matter by Tami Charles, The Youngest Marcher by Cynthia Levinson, Something Happened in our Town by Ann Hazzard and Let’s Talk About Race by Julius Lester. They have designed lesson plans around the four books and are Zooming into classrooms to teach lessons with K-5 graders.
