On-Demand vs. Traditional Courses: Which Is Right for Me?

by | Feb 20, 2025

Choosing the right type of online course is an important decision that can shape your learning experience. At the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC), we offer two primary course types at the 9-12 level—on-demand courses and traditional courses—to meet the diverse needs of our students. But how do these courses differ, and how can you decide which is the best fit for you?

In this post, we’ll break down the key differences between on-demand and traditional courses, their unique benefits, and how to determine which type of course aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

What Are On-Demand Courses?

On-demand courses offer maximum flexibility. With rolling enrollment, you can start an on-demand course at any time and complete the course within six months of beginning the course. You can work at your own pace, making them ideal for students who need a highly personalized approach.

Key Features of On-Demand Courses:

  • Start Anytime: No need to wait for a semester to begin—start when it suits you best.
  • Self-Paced: You have the flexibility to accelerate your learning or take your time as long as you finish within six months.

What Are Traditional Courses?

Traditional courses follow a fixed academic calendar, with specific start and end dates that align with a typical school year. These courses are also asynchronous, allowing you to work at your own pace within structured deadlines. Fall semester courses run from late August to mid-January, and spring semester courses begin in mid-January and end in late June.

Key Features of Traditional Courses:

  • Semester-Based Schedule: Courses align with the academic calendar, providing a familiar structure.
  • Deadlines for Assignments: Work is divided into manageable “chunks,” with specific deadlines to keep you on track.

What do On-Demands and Traditional courses have in common?

On-demand and traditional courses have a number of qualities that set them apart – but you may be wondering if they have anything in common. There are a number of facets that connect on-demands and traditional courses.

  • Both on-demand and traditional courses at VTVLC are offered asynchronously, meaning that students can log in and make progress on their course at whatever time works best for them. This could be during a free period during the school day, or during evenings and weekends.
  • All VTVLC courses are instructed by Vermont educators who hold their Online Teaching Specialist endorsement.
  • VTVLC offers elective, core-content, global language, Advanced Placement, and NCAA-approved options in both on-demand and  traditional formats
  • Both on-demand and online courses are great options for students with busy schedules and time commitments or for students who are looking for course options that aren’t available at their brick-and-mortar school.

How to Choose the Right Course for You

When deciding between on-demand and traditional courses, consider your goals, learning preferences, and lifestyle. Here are some questions to guide your choice:

1. Do You Need Flexibility in Timing?

If you have a packed schedule with extracurriculars, a part-time job, or travel commitments, on-demand courses are your best option. You can start anytime and work at a pace that suits you.

If you prefer the structure of a semester and thrive with clear deadlines, traditional courses might be a better fit.

2. Are You Looking to Supplement Traditional Schooling?

If you attend a brick-and-mortar school and want to take one or two additional courses, traditional courses align well with the academic calendar, making it easier to integrate them into your existing schedule.

3. Do You Prefer a Self-Paced Learning Approach?

Both course types offer asynchronous learning, but on-demand courses give you more control over pacing. If you’re self-motivated and want to accelerate your learning—or slow down when needed—on-demand courses provide the flexibility you need.

4. Do You Want to Maximize Learning Opportunities?

With rolling enrollment, on-demand courses allow you to fit in more courses during an academic year. This is ideal for students who want to earn extra credits or explore additional subjects.

5. Do You Need Accountability?

If you find it challenging to stay on track without regular deadlines, the structured approach of traditional courses may help you stay motivated and engaged.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose On-Demand Courses If:
    • You need maximum flexibility.
    • You want to start a course outside of the typical semester schedule.
    • You prefer to set your own pace.
  • Choose Traditional Courses If:
    • You want to follow a structured academic calendar.
    • You’re supplementing your brick-and-mortar school schedule.
    • You benefit from assignment deadlines to stay on track.
