Our most asked question: Why Online Learning?

by | Oct 30, 2024

At the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC), we get asked this question all the time: Why choose online learning?

With so many fantastic brick-and-mortar schools across Vermont, it’s natural to wonder why a student might opt for virtual education. The answer isn’t that one approach is better than the other—it’s that every student’s needs are unique, and online learning can provide an option that complements or enhances traditional schooling. In this post, we’ll explore some of the reasons why students choose online learning and how it helps them thrive academically and personally.

I’ve witnessed my student taking much more interest in and accountability for their learning. They’re keeping track of deadlines and ensuring they are participating in live lessons. VTVLC has truly been the best decision for this school year and I am pleased with the progress my student has made.

1. Flexibility for Scheduling Conflicts

Sometimes, students face scheduling conflicts between required classes and electives they are passionate about. For example, a student might want to take a specific AP course, but it conflicts with the time their global language course is offered. Or, maybe a student wants to participate in band, but it’s offered at the same time as a graduation requirement like P.E.

With VTVLC, students can work on their online courses at times that fit their schedules—during a free period at school, in the evening, or even on weekends. This flexibility empowers students to make the most of their education without giving up any of the classes they care about.

2. Access to Courses Not Offered Locally

Some courses simply aren’t available at every school. Some high schools, especially in smaller communities, may not offer highly specialized or niche subjects due to demand or logistical challenges. That’s where VTVLC comes in, offering an exciting variety of options such as Animation, Fashion Design, and Programming with Python.

Even in core subjects, VTVLC can add variety—offering classes like Marine Biology, African-American History, Journalism, and Personal Finance. These courses allow students to explore interests beyond what might be available locally, enriching their education and preparing them for college or career opportunities.

3. Balancing Sports, Careers, and Travel

Some students have busy lives beyond the classroom. Whether they’re dedicated athletes, performers, or simply balancing other responsibilities, the flexibility of online learning allows them to pursue their goals without sacrificing their education.

Students who travel for sports competitions or family reasons can stay on top of their coursework, meeting the same rigorous academic standards as they would in a traditional classroom. With VTVLC, students don’t have to choose between their dreams and their education—they can do both.

4. Learning at Their Own Pace

Online learning offers students the ability to move at a pace that works for them. If a student struggles with a particular concept, they can take the time they need to fully understand it before moving on. On the other hand, if a student has mastered the material, they can progress more quickly through the course.

This self-paced approach allows students to manage their own learning journey. It also means that highly motivated students can complete more credits in a given timeframe, giving them the chance to get ahead.

5. Finding the Best Learning Environment

Every student learns differently. While many students thrive in traditional classrooms, others may feel more comfortable learning in a different environment. Online learning provides an alternative for students who prefer a quieter, more focused space or who benefit from being able to customize their schedule and workload.

At VTVLC, students have the flexibility to create a learning environment that works best for them—whether that’s at home, at school, or on the road. For some students, this environment fosters creativity, independence, and success in ways that a traditional classroom may not.

Is Online Learning Right for Your Student?
